The Role of Legislation and Advocacy
Making A Difference

One of the most significant turning points in the shift away from dog fighting has been the role of legislation. Laws have become stricter regarding animal cruelty, and the penalties for dog fighting are now more severe. Countries, states, and regions have instituted breed-specific laws to address the sale and ownership of certain breeds, but these laws often unfairly target the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and similar breeds. However, many animal rights groups have advocated for a shift toward education and responsible pet ownership instead of banning specific breeds.
Educational programs, both in schools and within communities, have helped spread knowledge about responsible pet care, the importance of proper training, and the harmful effects of dog fighting. When people understand the root causes of aggression in dogs, they can make better decisions when it comes to adopting or raising these animals. Awareness campaigns and social media platforms have also done wonders in highlighting success stories of Staffordshire Bull Terriers thriving in loving homes, further changing public perception.
One thing we cannot lose sight of is that a dog’s behavior is primarily determined by its environment and master. It is the master/owner’s lack of care, training and attention that cause the bad behavior. It is the care, attention and training of the master/owner that ensures the dog’s behavior is correct and they live a happy, safe life. So, legislation has helped but there is and will be no substitute for great owners. This is why I spend time and effort ensuring I find this type of owner.
